Hi AVG is very good.
Spybot is good. The AVG spyware is only a trial version, you can oly use it for a limited period and if you want to continue, you have to shell out for it.
In addition to all the other good anwers above, there is spyware defender from http://www.spywaredefender.com This works in real time and blocks nasties as they arise.
If you are downloading something you can trust, you can click on "accept", if not then "deny" is the button to push. It learns as it goes, I do not know why it is free, I really don't.
