i suggest you dont get one, especially the ones for free. what anti-virus does is that it just brings more virus, trojens, whatever you wanna call them, all kinds of things to your computer just to show that their anti-viruses can pick up these stuff. you don't the rights to scan remote systems, trend only lets you scan locally, unless you get the pro, network edition... Also, the free trend program only scans for viruses and stuff, it doesn't remove them. Not ehtat they link you to a site what has some remover programs but the free stuff is limited. It's marketing. It'll tell you if you have a virus, but if you want viruses removed you have to pay for the antivirus software. AVG is good to keep known viruses away, but as for remote systems like I stated you have to pay for the professional version. And those are only for drives on your network, not another domain.

Those two programs won't conflict if you use the appropriate settings...

If you have an active subscription to Norton, make sure that it is up to date. If your subscription is over, then use RevoUninstaller to uninstall it. Then install AVG in its place. Regardless of which of these you do, then install ThreatFire.

You should also visit the Google Pack website in order to download Spyware Doctor for free.

I would also recommend that you use Mozilla's Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Once it's installed, you should also install the Adblock Plus add-on. Once you have them grouped together, look at the memory use for each process; if needed, open calc and add them up. On my test system, they're using between 80MB and 90MB of RAM, depending on the activity at any given time. If I'm actually doing something within McAfee, that can boost the usage over 100MB.

The bigger question is, what did you do that resulted in 1318 viruses? It sounds like you need to do more than just getting a virus scanner, you need to change how you use your computer. A virus scanner can only do so much.

Get yourself a couple of good spyware cleaners. I recommend Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free. After you've downloaded and got the latest updates for both restart your computer in safe mode. Safe mode is important because you don鈥檛 want any of the spyware or viruses running while you鈥檙e doing the scans. If they are running, the scan programs can鈥檛 delete them. Do each spyware scan one at a time plus a virus scan while in safe mode. Hopefully that should slove the problem. See the links below.

Start off with Firefox (getfirefox.com), this crap would be blocked since it's the best browser out there, in my opinion. Internet Explorer is notorious for letting these things get by. Also, download AdAware (lavasoft.de) and SpywareBlaster (javacoolsoftware.com).
Sounds like you've got way too much freeware on your computer.

All you need is Spybot for spyware and adware... I would question whether or not you got it from the vendor http://www.safer-networking.org and if so, whether it is properly installed, properly configured, etc..

Sounds like you've got some freeware antivirus which is pretty nutty if you ask me.. antivirus is not something you can have free.. it really MUST be properly configured and automatically downloaded updates.. which freeware has no incentive to do and usually does not perform real-time scanning which is essential.

So I strongly recommend you chuck that freeware and get antivirus / firewall from a RELIABLE vendor.. like mcafee, norton, kaspersky, etc.. properly configure it, and ensure it's enabled and automatically updating..

Whenever I access that folder named Apps in my D:/ drive sized appx 7.62 GBs and double click on it Control Panel Window opens wrongly. A couple of people have mentioned fine ways to delete your cached files, and there's even been a good answer about how if you think you have a RAM problem, maybe you need more. I don't want to be repetitive or poach, so I won't repeat those answers.

I suspect the heart of your problem is that either a) your computer is running slow so you think you need more RAM, b) you're running out of disk space, which deleting cached files will not measurably help, or c) you're trying to get rid of something specific in your cached files.

If it's 'a' or 'c', then you have all the info you need. If it's 'b' then your cached and temporary files probably only consume about 150MB or less and getting rid of them won't help much at all. You can reduce the size of your recycle folder (Right click on Recycle Bin %26gt; Properties %26gt; resize down into the 1 or 2 percent range, reboot) and your System Restore (Right click My Computer %26gt; System Properties %26gt; System Restore %26gt; run the slider down to about 5 percent). If that's not enough, start offloading your mp3, mpg/wmv/avi files and any ISO's you might have.

i'd say it's your RAM. no other good solution except to buy a new one. but i do have a slightly improving solution (but far from as good as buy a new RAM). go to control panel, open the system, and click the performance tab.

check the "adjust for the performance" and click "apply". DON'T click on the "ok" button first. click on "advanced" tab.

in the "virtual memory" section, click change.

increase the seize of the paging. this won't be a problem if you have a lot of free space on your hard disk. this be will added up to your physical memory(RAM) as a virtual memory. it will not be as fast as physical RAM, but will at least increase your computer's speed. click "ok" and that's it...

Whenever a problem is presented, it is sort of mandatory to mention the computer specs - the amt. of RAM, HDD space, the Processor and the OS used - because, the answers are fully dependent on the above information.

Yes it's fine, they won't clash. I use Spy-bot and Ad-aware.

They don't automatically check your system, you have to tell them to do it. They are both free for personal use. And one will normally pick up something the other doesn't.

Why not install 2 antivirus? Well, anti-virus software searches for just that, viruses, although some are very good, often they will not search for spyware and adware. For example if you download a free game, the game may contain adware, but you virus checker will not pick it up. And some anti virus software are too powerful and will block everything slowing down your internet connection to a snails pace.

I would recommend have one anti-virus software running all the time, such as Norton Anti-virus (or a good free one such as Avast!), as well as the two other programs, Spy-bot and Ad-aware, run these other two about once a week independently, and this should keep things under control.

Most antiviruses now only download new definitions rather than the whole database. When I had dialup and used avast it updated really quickly.

Windows update is a different matter, some months the downloads are quite small but sometimes they can be quite large. With servicepacks though you can usually find a magazine with it on the coverdisc after they are released.

I would overall suggest getting broadband though, once you do you won't want to return to dialup. Hopefully you are not asking this as you are one of the people who can't get broadband

Yep! Anti-virus software can be purchased from a shop and installed without being connected to the internet, and scanner updates are relatively small. Windows Update can be run with dial-up. While some updates for windows are huge, don't forget that as you have dial-up you are less vulnerable to viruses as you are not connected to the internet for that long. 'Always-on' connections are much more likely to be targetted by viruses and hackers.

And Windows Service Packs are sometimes put on discs attached to the front of computer magazines to save downloading them. I obtained SP2 that way!

If you don't have those 3 things already, then yes you should get them. However, there is at least a free version of anti-spyware called Ad-Aware (I think Ad-Aware 2007 is the latest version) that you can get from http://www.lavasoftusa.com .

The thing I like about AVG Free is that it is not a resource hog like McAfee or Norton and it works pretty well (with the occasionaly false positive). If the full version is just as "lightweight" then it may be a good purchase (I've never ponied up the cash myself).

Unfortunately I have no recommendations for Anti-spam or personal firewall.

I just got a 2 year retail boxed AVG Internet Security 7.5 on Ebay for $30 delivered. Of course its better. If it wasn't nobody would be buying or recommending it. I love it when people eat up system resouces running 4 different security programs "because they're free!"
I'm using F-Secure which would cost me a whole lot of money if I didn't have it for free. I guess the biggest thing you get from paying for virus protection is know that if there is a problem you get support right away over the phone. You don't get that with free spyware blasters. Also there is that saying "You get what you pay for" but I've used both free and I just got F-Secure and if I didn't have it for free I probably wouldn't be paying for it. Only if your computer is on a network would you need to pay for something like that.
I use AVG Free for anti-virus and Adaware for spyware/adware, and MailWasher for spam, all are free...and havent had any problems. XP has a built in firewall.
I don't really know, because I haven't tried AVG, but I will say that McAfee ain't what it used to be, if it ever was, and ever since Symantec bought Peter Norton's name and used it without his expertise, NAV's been crapware. I inherited a laptop and a desktop, both with expired NAV on them, from the project I worked on from 1998 to 2002. In 2007, I suddenly found that NAV was becoming more aware, even if it was whining that it couldn't do anything about the malware it was finding. (Is that pitiful or what?!)

Anyway, to make a long story short, either the malware or a glitch in the CMOS had set my system clock back to 2002, and apparently this told NAV to do an update on my "unexpired" subscription! By reading what NAV was whining about being unable to fix, I was able to use MKS (a Korn shell on top of Windows to supply all the useful UNIX tools Microsoft was too retarded to think of) to ps -ef and kill -9, etc.
I guess yes, I like their anti-virus program. However, download the trail version to make sure the spyware, etc, doesn't conflict with other programs on your computer first.

Try this go to http://www.trendmicro.com and do their free virus scan, I think they call it "house call". You should be able to scan and delete the Trojan. Also you could download the McAfee 30 trial and install it update it and use it to get the Trojan. But it sounds like AVG is not getting the job done on this virus. You can attempt "fixes" like defragging, and additional bolt-ons to try to repair the bloated and corrupted registry - but nothing works like a re-install. Time to spend some more money on something like "Ghost" - it saves a good deal of time on the re-installs!

Some files I had recently downloaded contained malware and spyware. I have avast antivirus (free and not the best, I know) and it's not getting rid of them. The files are not in the Add/Remove Programs section. Could anyone tell me how to find the files please?

2 things you can do. Search for the file (think of the name short and simple - if looking for spyware search only spy) and also click the option hidden files. OR go to the temp folder (go to your C drive or w.e is your main driver and search in that folder.

Sure, just go to Start, Programs, Acc, SystemResore and restore to a date before you loaded them in. Reboot, They will be gone.

Go to C:\windows\Downloaded Program Files\

All Files you see inside this folder are downloaded from your last visit.

You can delete from there.

Clear temp files , cookies and history to remove complete traces.

Empty the recycle bin Too.

These are all basics, but if system is infected these cannot help.
i think u should chek out temporary internet files to remove them....i suggest norton....it' real good

comp specs:

p4, 3.0ghz, 512ram, raedon X300/X550 series 128ram, adsl broadband, 80gb HDD which currently is abt 50% used

i am getting strange CPU usage spikes ~100% from windows task manager (performances); graphics laggy and sound stuttery. however usually i am in the game maplestory when it happens; im unable to see wat caused the spike, only that there was a spike in the history..

processes dont go above 20k Mem usage (viewed during non spike period) and all processes seem normal (not suspicious)

have run anti virus scan, and ad-aware, in fact just format my pc 2wks ago, and never had this problem until today; ie i was able to run all these applications previously, and even more on occasion without any problem at all

Sadly though, it is caused by having too many programs running in your computer.

I suggest disabling the Zone Alarm application as well as changing your Bittorent client to utorrent as that bittorent client uses more memory as well as CPU power compared to utorrent.

Also, windows sometimes does those cpu spikes because it is readjusting its virtual memory settings. If you can, try specifying your virual memory settings though control panel, system.

Also, that 20k (20 thousand) memory usage is too much, my computer barely even reached one thousand memory usage.

I have IE and also Mozilla Firefox. Forefox will not connect at all but internet explorer will but it take a long time to connect and to finish loading up. Everythings running slow. I cleaned up my disk and defragmented it. I have AVG AntiVirus free edition which does not fully protect my computer. But it does detect viruses and heals them. It detected one yesterday and asked if I wanted to heal it, so I did but it's still running slow and Mozilla Firefox still won't connect and IE is still going really slow. Should I do the system restore and take it back to an earlier time or should I un-install and re-install Firefox and or IE? If I was to re-install Firefox, how can I save all my bookmarks that I have saved under it? I don't know what to do... For the firefox bookmarks, go to organize bookmark. It will open a new window. The go to file -%26gt; export bookmark. It will then save the bookmark information to a Html file. Default name is bookmark.html. You can later then import the bookmark and find everything back to where it was.

the reason it's called this is that the program doesn't do anything malicious such as destroying files..

So in your case, the program's sole purpose is to open a pop-up advertisement on your computer. (which is not malicious like a file eater but it is annoying and it is "potentialy unwanted")

Yes. I downloaded Comodo Firewall Pro and AVG detectected 4 threats after installing it. I also had a problem with my cursor freezing after installing it. The computer slowed down greatly. The pop-ups are annoying. To overcome the cursor problem I had to uninstall Comodo in safe mode. After uninstalling Comodo it still stayed on my computer active as a firewall. I had to do a system restore to get rid of Comodo. I would recommend using ZoneAlarm. I've had no problems with ZoneAlarm and there are less pop-up messages, which doesn't mean there is less protection it is just as good.
No I have never had a problem think it's the best one out there I love it I use it on Vista and XP no problems.

helpful as it helped me detect lots of viruses in my system. In fact, it has now proved to be as 'too helpful'.This is why.

AVG creates a vault, i hope you know all this, where the viruses are made a back-up so that they dont hurt the system. The vault is created in all local drives. Normally, i first move the viruses to the vault first and then delete them manually.

This time,a file -config.ini, if my memory is correct, was seen in the vault and i deleted it to the recycle bin from the vault without knowing that it was a system file. And guess what, my system doesn't load the OS( i have XP) after a restart. It keeps on restarting after showing the ACER logo.

What should i do in order to get my system working correctly??

Remember i have the config.ini file in my recycle bin and it is not fully deleted from the system.

I am not sure how critical that file is. Try to boot into Safe Mode and do a system restore. If you can not even do that, you should get a option in safe mode to use last known good configuration.

Usually it's hardware that you just installed is causing windows to crash so the computer restarts your computer to supposedly "save files". Remove any hardware you just installed, or any mp3 devices or cameras you have connected. Then restart and see if that works.

Spy-bot Search and Destroy found it right off and got rid of it.As for why it keeps coming back, does someone else have access to your machine? Maybe they are downloading it. OK you deffinately dont want to user more than one, you can use on AV and one Anti spy but if you use the same type on two different ones they will cancel out, if your gonna do that than u might as well not run anything, most applications and programs will detect if you have more than one and will ask you to remove it before they install or they will just automatically do it, Ex. AVG has poor detection rates. The free version does not come with the ewido engine that is part of the pro version. it doesn't shape up well against other free products, and should be avoided if you want to the best protection for your machine.

My opinion is that AVG is one of the best free anti-virus programs. It does hog your computer resources and I know that it works.
