comp specs:

p4, 3.0ghz, 512ram, raedon X300/X550 series 128ram, adsl broadband, 80gb HDD which currently is abt 50% used

i am getting strange CPU usage spikes ~100% from windows task manager (performances); graphics laggy and sound stuttery. however usually i am in the game maplestory when it happens; im unable to see wat caused the spike, only that there was a spike in the history..

processes dont go above 20k Mem usage (viewed during non spike period) and all processes seem normal (not suspicious)

have run anti virus scan, and ad-aware, in fact just format my pc 2wks ago, and never had this problem until today; ie i was able to run all these applications previously, and even more on occasion without any problem at all

how can i stop this from happening or find out whats causing it???

Sadly though, it is caused by having too many programs running in your computer.

I suggest disabling the Zone Alarm application as well as changing your Bittorent client to utorrent as that bittorent client uses more memory as well as CPU power compared to utorrent.

Also, windows sometimes does those cpu spikes because it is readjusting its virtual memory settings. If you can, try specifying your virual memory settings though control panel, system.

Also, that 20k (20 thousand) memory usage is too much, my computer barely even reached one thousand memory usage.

Problem with my internet connecting...?

I have IE and also Mozilla Firefox. Forefox will not connect at all but internet explorer will but it take a long time to connect and to finish loading up. Everythings running slow. I cleaned up my disk and defragmented it. I have AVG AntiVirus free edition which does not fully protect my computer. But it does detect viruses and heals them. It detected one yesterday and asked if I wanted to heal it, so I did but it's still running slow and Mozilla Firefox still won't connect and IE is still going really slow. Should I do the system restore and take it back to an earlier time or should I un-install and re-install Firefox and or IE? If I was to re-install Firefox, how can I save all my bookmarks that I have saved under it? I don't know what to do... Yes. I downloaded Comodo Firewall Pro and AVG detectected 4 threats after installing it. I also had a problem with my cursor freezing after installing it. The computer slowed down greatly. The pop-ups are annoying. To overcome the cursor problem I had to uninstall Comodo in safe mode. After uninstalling Comodo it still stayed on my computer active as a firewall. I had to do a system restore to get rid of Comodo. I would recommend using ZoneAlarm. I've had no problems with ZoneAlarm and there are less pop-up messages, which doesn't mean there is less protection it is just as good.
No I have never had a problem think it's the best one out there I love it I use it on Vista and XP no problems.

AVG creates a vault, i hope you know all this, where the viruses are made a back-up so that they dont hurt the system. The vault is created in all local drives. Normally, i first move the viruses to the vault first and then delete them manually.

This time,a file -config.ini, if my memory is correct, was seen in the vault and i deleted it to the recycle bin from the vault without knowing that it was a system file. And guess what, my system doesn't load the OS( i have XP) after a restart. It keeps on restarting after showing the ACER logo.

What should i do in order to get my system working correctly??

Remember i have the config.ini file in my recycle bin and it is not fully deleted from the system.

I am not sure how critical that file is. Try to boot into Safe Mode and do a system restore. If you can not even do that, you should get a option in safe mode to use last known good configuration.

AVG has poor detection rates. The free version does not come with the ewido engine that is part of the pro version. it doesn't shape up well against other free products, and should be avoided if you want to the best protection for your machine.

windows onecare works well, but it only works for 90 days. Lavasoft Ad-Aware is amazing for adware and spyware. If you have comcast internet you can get McAffee for free.

All of those above are free. Besides OneCar which only works for 90 days before the trial period runs out.

How can I improve download speed of messages with attachments?

Outlook is incredibly slow when dealing with messages with large attachments. I used outlook express until about seven months ago. The speed there was better, but still not very good.

I use AVG free edition antivirus. It is set to inspect incoming messages. I turned off the outgoing scanner as it crippled the programs at times.

Is this something caused by AVG, or would it be the same with a different antivirus solution?

First of all, one of the easiest wey to stop online attacks is, STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER. Ever noticed that add ons can be attached to that particular browser only. As well it uses ActiveX controls, whether you need it not. which allows your computer to be identified. Norton will not uninstall itself if running. Right click on the taskbar icon and select disable. Then go into the control panel/Program and Features. Select the Update first, and uninstall. Then select Norton and uninstall.

Some days there are no re-login requests from Yahoo. Most days, I will get many ... sometime 3 or more in a row with no chance to visit the inbox in-between. Purging cookies did not help. It got worse at about the time I upgraded to IE 7, so I went back to FireFox. I am having the problem with it, too. I have not recently changed antivirus (AVG free), firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) nor changed by security settings. I cannot continue to use Yahoo unless I can get this resolved. I do have antispyware installed, but the resident components are disabled. (WinXP SP2 w/all updates)

Yahoo has been having major server issues since at LEAST Jan. 10, seemingly just with particular servers. And what's happening to you is unfortunately one of the many problems that people are having because of them, and Yahoo doesn't seem to be in any particular hurry to solve them. And the problems are not just w/Yahoo Beta or IE7; I and others not using either are having similar problems. But both do have more problems; if you're using Beta, it's still in the testing stage and has a lot of problems, so go back to original Yahoo mail, and the same w/IE7, go back to IE6 until MS irons out all the problems.

I've had to use another acct.provided free by my ISP to send/rcv important e-mails since Jan. 10, and it's been working just fine the whole time. If you don't have another acct.w/another provider besides Yahoo, I'd strongly advise to get one; it makes a good backup in case of problems like this.

2.Move everything you want to save on that external hard drive.

3.Reformat the entire hard drive.

4.Reinstall the operating system.

5.Resinstall all the apps.

first of all, i mostly use my computer just for 2 things,(mainly) and that is to get on windows Live/AIM and download music on limewire (all my songs i put in on CD)

anyways, when i use my computer, my MSN Live hardly responds and it freezes all tha time and makes my computer slow,

i restarted my computer and closed AIM, Windows MSN Live and limewire then my computer is working normal,

omg i dont get it,

if i dont have any of my main programs on then my computer ''seems'' to work properly, but once i put them on it freezes on me and barely responds

Although I don't use internet explorer, I want to remove an homepage hijacker thats hijacked my homepage on my IE. so i just got a new computer, and it has two free months of antivirus, and spyware. But what do you think the best spyware/antivirus, anti spam, etc. for when this two months is up? I heard you can get them for free off the net.....some help plz?

The best anti virus software you can have is your own common sense! P2P sites such as limewire and bearshare are the favorite method of passing malware these days! Most people who use these sites arent even aware that they are helping to spread malware! I really like Trend Micro products. They seem to be very thorough....blocking spyware, malware, viruses, spam, etc. The free ones generally use the panda software engine. They usually get the big stuff, but are much slower to react to new viruses.

A few days ago I noticed Avg free was disabled, so was windows defender, and wouldn麓t re-activate when I tried. In fact, any free or trial antivirus I downloaded would not install and system restore fails everytime.

W32.Beagle.xx has the ability to kill any running antivirus in your system, so using any antivirus will be failed. run (remove everything it can)

reboot in safe mode,

run remove-it-pro,

and it will do the rest.

It may freeze when scanning on the first time... if it does just click abort and remove the files from there, then rescan.=)

My laptop crashes as soon as it starts up. Can you help?

The problem started when I shut down my computer (IBM laptop, several years old) after installing the free trial of Zone Alarm. When I restarted it next, I was presented with the Blue Screen of Doom. Details as follow:

1. Power button is pressed.

2. Windows loads normally.

3. Network login (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), followed by accepted login with correct username and password. Workstation only, as always.

4. AVG Free (my preferred antivirus) updates before anything else loads.

5. Desktop icons appear.

6. Icons begin to load in tray.

7. Blue screen appears, computer restarts.

The STOP stuff is given as a string of numbers that I, having no experience with programming, am completely confused by.

Multiple restarts have the same effect, with varied times on the desktop, but I still am unable to bring up a program or sometimes even the Start menu before the blue screen appears.

Help please?

I have had the same problem on my customers' computers. This sounds like a hardware/software conflict with your operating system(windows). I can't give too much advice, since I would need to investigate but basically you would need to remove the hardware/software that is causing the conflict. If this is not possible (mainboard conflict) or takes too much time to remove the hardware/software, I would just reformat the hard drive and re-install the operating system. 9 times out of 10 I end up doing that because it is a waste of time to try and figure out what went wrong where. Keep in mind though, that when you re-install the operating system, there is a great chance that this could happen again. In that case, I would suggest getting a newer computer to save yourself the grief in the long run.

start up in safe mode (how you do this depends on the computer but it usually del or one of the F keys). Then uninstall zone alarm. I have it on my l laptop and it works fine but it sounds like that's your problem. The safe mode should keep it from strarting when you boot up.

sometimes after a windows update, my computer automatically reboots and when i turn the monitor on (after days, sometimes longer like a week) it is on the windows user login screen.

i am using avg free edition for antivirus and zonealarm free edition for firewall. but these don't get loaded until after i login, i presume.

no you're safe, your PC at login state is basically asleep and rendered inoperable. I remember once trying to remote trojan into a machine in this state and all I got was a white screen (since the shell hasn't even loaded.). As a test I found out that it's not possible, so you're safe. Aside from it you have a firewal in Vista which wouldn't allow access to anyone. So you're good. :)

i was downloading the 90 day free trail norton antivirus and when it started scanning it said that i had a hard risk virus and it had to restart and when it restarted it wouldnt let me log on. Is it possilbe to reinstall with the backup disk or what can i do without having to take it in.

If you have the original cd's that came with the computer, then yes you cna reinstall the machine. However this will wipe all exisiting files and any programs you have loaded that did not come with the computer at purchase. So be prepared to spend time reconstructing all these and reloading the necessary additional software. You may be able to access the drive from safe mode and pull off some of the personal files to like a thumb drive or floppy or burnable cd. So Good luck

System Restore is useless here. It will only restore the virus, along with your settings for that restore point. Unfortunately, the best course of action here is to reformat your system. Hopefully, you have a backup. If not, you can make one, but be warned that you MAY backup the virus itself. DON'T USE THE SYSTEM BACKUP. Do it manually, and burn your files to CD (Pick the files then right click%26gt;send to CD). Otherwise, you will DEFINITELY back the virus up, and you'll just end up reloading it onto your newly formatted system. Use a program like KillDisk (free) to scrub the hard drive, as the virus is most likey living in sector 0 (boot sector), and the standard Windows reformat typically will not rewrite that sector. After using KillDisk, boot to the Windows CD and reformat again using the NTFS file system, then reinstall Windows. Good as new! After all that is complete, restore your files from your backup CDs. Hopefully, the virus was not embedded in anything within your docs or anything else, and you are fine. If, after restoring your files, the virus rears it's ugly head again, it's somewhere within your backup! Consider the data lost, trash the CDs, and perform all the steps listed above again, MINUS reloading the backup, of course. Good luck!

Question about SSL on home computer?

I am at my wits end with this problem and I am hoping someone out there can help me with it.

Problem: when I purchase something online my computer won't show the confirmation pages for my purchases althought the purchase generally shows up on my bank site and I receive confirmation email from the company I purchase from. In my online college library, after I type in a search, it won't go to the results. There is a lot of lag sometimes, too. I can no longer use Yahoo Chat because the program keeps turning off and on while I am chatting. I tried using other chat clients but have the same result with them. My antivirus software (AVG Free and Prevx) says everything is all clear as far as that goes.AT%26T has reset the router three times, and there doesn't appear to be a line issue, so I am thinking maybe I am having an SSL issue. But, this is just a shot in the dark for me as I know a smidgen about computers but not enough to say for sure what the problem is. Don't want to have to wipe it!

There are many tests for SSl function - here is one that is a quick check from Boston University, that will just establish a SSL (HTTPS) connection and verify that encrypted data can transfer back and forth.

Generally you wouldn't be able to even make a purchase online if SSL was not working, as the credit card page should ALWAYS be encrypted . Not sure if you have ever run firefox browser instead of Microsoft Internet explorer. But that would be an excellent way to test SSL function, and the security of your connection, beside that FIREFOX is more secure that IE.

My suspicion is that your connection is being spoofed or hijacked, maybe intentionally. Do you share a wireless connection in your house? Perhaps the router will not do 128 bit encryption. I would try to hardwire to the router just for a test, instead of wireless, if that is your configuration.

What DO YOU GET when you complete a purchase? I mean what screen comes up? connection lost error? timed out? or just...nothing?

Wow, worried? I think you're fine, but I hate Norton. But yeah, you have everything I would have. I also use registry mechanic. It works really well in finding very obscure discrepancies in your registry. Much better at its job than virus software programs.
