I admit I don't know much about computers, but I do run ad-aware, spybot and an antivirus program and also clean out my cookies and defrag. Am I doing something wrong?
Why does my computer run so slowly if 75% of my C drive is free space?suzuki
i'd say it's your RAM. no other good solution except to buy a new one. but i do have a slightly improving solution (but far from as good as buy a new RAM). go to control panel, open the system, and click the performance tab.
check the "adjust for the performance" and click "apply". DON'T click on the "ok" button first. click on "advanced" tab.
in the "virtual memory" section, click change.
increase the seize of the paging. this won't be a problem if you have a lot of free space on your hard disk. this be will added up to your physical memory(RAM) as a virtual memory. it will not be as fast as physical RAM, but will at least increase your computer's speed. click "ok" and that's it...

Whenever a problem is presented, it is sort of mandatory to mention the computer specs - the amt. of RAM, HDD space, the Processor and the OS used - because, the answers are fully dependent on the above information.
You may need to upgrade your computer to a faster microprocessor or add ram to speed it up.
If your ram is below 512MB or if your processor is below 1GHZ or both then that's probably the source of your problem.
Mainly this slowdown may be result of computer configuration, i.e. low speed processor, small RAM and etc.
And you should know that ad-aware, spybot and an antivirus programs slow down the computer speed. So try to minimize the number of ad-aware, spybot and an antivirus programs.
Another reason might be virus. Ad-aware, spybot and an anti virus programs cannot remove all viruses, because nearly every hour tens of new viruses invented. The essential thing here is when you felt that your computer speed slows down. If this happened after you visited SOME SPECIAL sites probably this is because of virus. First thing you need to check your comp's STARTUP.
Of course there may be a lot of reasons.
