How do I rid my computer of the Trojan horse virus Generic4.BO? And how do I recover from the damage

My antivirus program AVG free edition reports threath of trojan horse Generic4.BO but the program cannot heal or remove the file. Additionally, my CD drives (two installed) are now useless and My Compurer, after a few clicks, stops responding. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the two drives to no avail. And no can any previous restore points be installed. Any help would be appreciated

System Restore is useless here. It will only restore the virus, along with your settings for that restore point. Unfortunately, the best course of action here is to reformat your system. Hopefully, you have a backup. If not, you can make one, but be warned that you MAY backup the virus itself. DON'T USE THE SYSTEM BACKUP. Do it manually, and burn your files to CD (Pick the files then right click%26gt;send to CD). Otherwise, you will DEFINITELY back the virus up, and you'll just end up reloading it onto your newly formatted system. Use a program like KillDisk (free) to scrub the hard drive, as the virus is most likey living in sector 0 (boot sector), and the standard Windows reformat typically will not rewrite that sector. After using KillDisk, boot to the Windows CD and reformat again using the NTFS file system, then reinstall Windows. Good as new! After all that is complete, restore your files from your backup CDs. Hopefully, the virus was not embedded in anything within your docs or anything else, and you are fine. If, after restoring your files, the virus rears it's ugly head again, it's somewhere within your backup! Consider the data lost, trash the CDs, and perform all the steps listed above again, MINUS reloading the backup, of course. Good luck!

What are the best ways to optimize my PC performance?

I understand pretty much the basic PC optimization techniques. Defrag, Spybot, Adaware, anti-virus, deleting cookies etc. However, I have noticed that my PC has been running slower and slower recently. Programs take a long time to load/shut down, internet pages load slower, etc. I havent added any major programs recently. I am afraid I might have picked up some really sneaky malware, viruses or rootkits. What are some really good techniques to optimize my PC for a person with an average PC IQ?

p.s. antivirus is AVG free addition, firewall is standard windows xp.

As a computer gets older it suffers from memory loss. This really slows down your speed the older the computer gets.Look in your task bar and see what programs are running on start up.Conflicting script will cause your computer to run slow too.

I would stick with AVG. I would dump Windows firewall and use one listed here http://wiki.castlecops.com/Roll_your_own...

If you think you still have malware follow the procedures here http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Remov...

If you have had your computer a long time it will build up a lot of crap and you need to clean it out. These two sites tell you how to manually clean out your computer http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/d... and http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index... The latter one is pretty aggressive and you should very careful about some of the recommendations. I would first recommend that you use CCleaner and ATF-Cleaner which are listed on the Malware and Prevention Overview listed above. Here is another site for manually cleaning your computer http://www.optimizingpc.com/optimize/del...

Question about SSL on home computer?

I am at my wits end with this problem and I am hoping someone out there can help me with it.

Problem: when I purchase something online my computer won't show the confirmation pages for my purchases althought the purchase generally shows up on my bank site and I receive confirmation email from the company I purchase from. In my online college library, after I type in a search, it won't go to the results. There is a lot of lag sometimes, too. I can no longer use Yahoo Chat because the program keeps turning off and on while I am chatting. I tried using other chat clients but have the same result with them. My antivirus software (AVG Free and Prevx) says everything is all clear as far as that goes.AT%26T has reset the router three times, and there doesn't appear to be a line issue, so I am thinking maybe I am having an SSL issue. But, this is just a shot in the dark for me as I know a smidgen about computers but not enough to say for sure what the problem is. Don't want to have to wipe it!

Question about SSL on home computer?malware

There are many tests for SSl function - here is one that is a quick check from Boston University, that will just establish a SSL (HTTPS) connection and verify that encrypted data can transfer back and forth.

Generally you wouldn't be able to even make a purchase online if SSL was not working, as the credit card page should ALWAYS be encrypted . Not sure if you have ever run firefox browser instead of Microsoft Internet explorer. But that would be an excellent way to test SSL function, and the security of your connection, beside that FIREFOX is more secure that IE.

My suspicion is that your connection is being spoofed or hijacked, maybe intentionally. Do you share a wireless connection in your house? Perhaps the router will not do 128 bit encryption. I would try to hardwire to the router just for a test, instead of wireless, if that is your configuration.

What DO YOU GET when you complete a purchase? I mean what screen comes up? connection lost error? timed out? or just...nothing?

The error may give you a clue, as well. Good luck.

Oh yeah, one thing I didn't think about - Your browser configuration may be set to block pages that contain secure and non-secure items. Check under TOOLS-%26gt;OPTIONS for SSL settings and security settings.

Third try: Reinstall Windows

Last try: Use some other multi-protocol messenger clients like GAIM, MirandaIM, or web-based Meebo.com

I have run PC Security Test and would like to improve the anti-hacking score, any ideas?

I already have windows vista defender, firewall, spybot, ad-aware, AVG antivirus, and the free version of Norton...

Wow, worried? I think you're fine, but I hate Norton. But yeah, you have everything I would have. I also use registry mechanic. It works really well in finding very obscure discrepancies in your registry. Much better at its job than virus software programs.

Anti virus?

where can i download a antivirus system ... FOR FREE!

Anti virus?microsoft

AVG is the best program to use. I spent 4 DAYS trying to remove a virus from my computer with no success. I tried everything under the sun - Spyware Doctor, Spysweeper, NoAdware, you name it, i tried it. I found a program called AVG from a website majorgeeks.com. Check out the review here.. http://www.majorgeeks.com/review.php?id=...

It took 20 mins to download (and i have a fairly slow connection), and 29 mins to clear the 72 viruses i had on my computer. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME restarting in safe mode, bla bla bla, i tried that too, to no avail. Go striaght to AVG here http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-F... and it will fix the problem. It found viruses that EVERY OTHER spyware couldnt pick up. Amazing program, and completely free. You dont have to pay for programs to remove or protect from viruses, dont listen to all these other people telling you to do impossible and time wasting things. Anyone can use this program, its so simple and straight forward. Good luck.

Anti virus?norton ghost

You have several options.

AVG http://www.free.grisoft.com

Avast www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.ht...

Comodo http://antivirus.comodo.com/

These are probably the best.
AVG antivirus is free. Look for it on download.com.

Its missing, so download it, and chuck it back into C:\windows\system32

This application has failed to start because RICHED20.dll was not found.?norton internet security 2008

You can download this file from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-fi...

After downloading, copy the file to c:\windows\system32\

If asked to replace or keep the existing file (in the event it exists but has become corrupt), rename the original file to riched20_old.dll and then copy the new file.

As a note, some of the icons that appear in your taskbar may also be associated with services, and cannot be uninstalled using Add/Remove Programs.
